The world’s top professional ice racers will travel to the Memorial Coliseum to do battle in the Portland round of the 34th Annual World Championship Ice Racing Series on December 19th, 2009. This is unleashed, lightning fast motorcycle ice racing at its best!  Motorcycle Ice Racing is a no holds barred motor sports competition featuring oval track racing’s thoroughbreds – the Manufacturer’s World Cup Motorcycles and the Wild Unlimited Outlaw Quads.  In most cities, I.C.E.’s support classes will be competing.  Support racing is becoming more popular with ice racing fans every year. The three classes eligible to compete this season are: Nitro X-Karts; Big Dogs Pit Bikes and Ice Breaker Quads.

The motorcycles used for ice racing are state-of-the-art, lightweight, high horsepower racing machines that come from most of the world’s major manufacturers.  Companies that build racing machines currently approved to compete for the World Championship include: ATK, Honda, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki and Yamaha.  These volatile vehicles are built with big engines and are very lightweight, with the ability to propel courageous racers from zero to 60 mph in under just 3 seconds.  It takes a brave soul to mount of these exotic race bikes, especially for competition on ice within the extremely tight confines of a hockey arena.

The Unlimited Outlaw Quads are highly modified 4-wheel ATV’s.  There are no rules governing engines and modification in this wide open class. Subsequently, competing in the same race could be a 1200cc Harley Davidson V-Twin, a four cylinder 1000cc Kawasaki, 350cc Yamahas, a full race Honda, or unmodified Suzuki.  The only chassis rule states that the quads cannot be wider than 50 inches at any point. The Outlaw Quads have been called, “The race cars you sit on – not in!”  Whoever said that racing is not a contact sport obviously has never attended an Ice Unlimited Outlaw Quad race. These machines and their colorful riders are a sight that must be seen to thoroughly experience.

More than twenty races will be seen in the Memorial Coliseum for the 34th Annual World Championship Ice Racing Series and when it’s over, champions will be crowned in each division competing.  Valuable points will also be earned towards the overall World Championship Title.
